Have you ever noticed that it’s possible to know a lot about someone without actually knowing them?
You might know where they work, what they do, and even hear stories about them—but until you spend time with them, talk with them, and build a relationship, you don’t really know them.
The same can be true in our walk with God.
Many of us grow up hearing about God in church, reading Bible stories, or listening to sermons. We learn facts about Him—His power, His miracles, His commandments. But knowing about God and truly knowing Him are two very different things.
“He will flatter and win over those who have violated the covenant. But the people who know their God will be strong and will resist him.”— Daniel 11:32 (NLT)
In this verse the Bible speaks about a group of people whose faith was different. Their strength didn’t come from knowledge alone, but from relationship.
But what does it really mean to know God? Jesus said something powerful about this:
“And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.”— John 17:3 (NLT)
Notice that eternal life is described as knowing God.
How To Know God
We get to know God by developing a real relationship with Him. We achieve this by:
- Spending time in His Word
- Talking to Him in prayer
- Trusting Him in our daily lives
- Watching how faithful He is
Over time, what starts as faith grows into relationship. And relationship changes everything.
Signs that you truly know God
You may wonder how you can be certain that you truly know God? This is how:
- You trust His character.
- You recognize His voice.
- You are not easily shaken by circumstances.
- You are not easily deceived.
Reflection:
Do I only know about God, or am I truly growing in knowing Him personally?
