No one really prays for humbling seasons.
We’re usually asking God for growth, breakthrough, and blessing—not for situations that expose our weaknesses or bring us to the end of ourselves. But if we’re honest, some of the moments that have shaped us the most are the ones where life didn’t go the way we expected.
The moments where we realized… I actually don’t have this under control.
Sometimes, that’s exactly where God meets us.
The Bible gently encourages us in 1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
There’s something important here—humility often comes before the lifting. Not as punishment, but as preparation.
God doesn’t humble us to shame us. He humbles us to draw us closer.
Sometimes He allows situations that stretch us—things we can’t fix quickly, control easily, or figure out on our own. In those moments, our usual confidence starts to fade, and we’re reminded just how much we need Him.
It might look like:
- Plans not working out the way you hoped.
- Feeling out of your depth in a new season.
- Being corrected or challenged in a way that’s uncomfortable.
- Realizing a weakness you didn’t notice before.
None of these feel good in the moment. But they have a way of softening our hearts.
There’s a story in the Bible about Nebuchadnezzar , a powerful king who became proud of everything he had built. He looked at his kingdom and basically said, “Look what I’ve done.” Not long after, he went through a season where everything changed, and he was humbled in a way he never expected.
But what’s powerful is how the story ends—he lifts his eyes to God, his understanding returns, and he acknowledges that God is the true ruler over all.
His humbling led him back to truth.
That’s often what God is doing in our lives too. When He humbles us, He’s not trying to break us—He’s realigning us. He’s reminding us where our strength comes from. He’s pulling us out of self-reliance and back into dependence on Him.
And while it may feel uncomfortable, there’s actually a lot of grace in it.
Because a humbled heart is a soft heart. A teachable heart. A heart that can truly receive from God.
In those seasons, we often pray more honestly. We listen more closely. We become more aware of God’s presence in ways we might have overlooked before.
And slowly, something shifts. We stop trying to prove ourselves. We stop trying to control everything. We begin to trust God more deeply.
That’s the quiet beauty of being humbled by God—it leads us back to Him.
Reflection Question
Is there a situation in my life right now that might be God inviting me to rely on Him more deeply?
A Simple Prayer
Lord, help me trust You in seasons that humble me. When I feel stretched or uncomfortable, remind me that You are drawing me closer, not pushing me away. Teach me to depend on You fully and shape my heart through every season, in Jesus Christ. Amen.
